Game 8 Anand completes a hat-trick, wins 5-3
Peaking at the right time, Vishy Anand won the eighth and final game against Judit Polgar, taking the Chess Classic Mainz 2003 title with a 5-3 score. It was a very closely contest event, though the final tally on board looks a little unflattering for the ever fighting Judit.

Anand - Polgar

It looks like someone has informed Anand and Judit that draw is banned in Mainz. For, the sixth game and third day in succession, the duo produced results and had spectators catching their breath, with their dynamic play. As is the custom, in this event, Judit took the lead, and Anand promptly equalised. But the sixth game was a see-saw affair, with some chances for both, but Anand held on, by a thin edge gaining the full point in the end.

Chess960 Match

In the fourth game of the Chess960 World Championship Leko had to think hard about the right stategy and that paid off: he won the game and took the lead in the match: 2,5 - 1,5.

The third game ended in a draw. Peter Svidler sacrificed two pawns for a dangerous attack. Peter Leko had trouble keeping his position together and he had to defend very precise.

Anand - Polgar

Anand evens at 2-2, two black wins make the day
Anyone asking for fighting chess, let them make a beeline for Mainz. For all the four games played so far, has produced results and for the statisticians it's even score, at 2-2. With black ruling the roost on the Friday, not a Black Friday, Anand once again came from behind to equalise. The fourth game, saw another Sicilian and what appeared to be a drawish opposite colored bishop, rook and queen ending. But Polgar pressed a little too hard and paid the penalty. 'I stretched the draw and paid heavily' said Judit after the game. Hats off, the Hungarian's fighting chess, as she wanted to finished the day with her lead intact.

Polgar swindles Anand, takes lead 2-1
In what seemed to be an Hungarian swindle, Polgar weaved the magic on the Indian as she turned the minus position into a winning one, with a energetic counter-attack.

Zvjaginsev had a lot of fun in the first day of the Chess Classic: “ I have never played Chess960 before. It is quite unusual to think from move one on, because you have to play basic chess. Some positions were quite difficult today, e.g. in the third round in which I played a very sharp game.

Hans Walter Schmitt is the Godfather of the 15th move of the Chess Tigers in the Internetmatch against the Rest of the World. Our Tiger-in-chief is absolutely sure that Chess960 has a bright future:
"If we take a look at the registrations for the Chess 960 Open you can see that we will not only have a very strong tournament, but the number of amateur players that is willing to try Chess 960 is increasing. And if we find a reliable way to record and file the games to be able to play and analyse the postions afterwards ,e.g. with ChessBase when they finally start realising Chess960 is the future, there will be no way back. The people who do not have much time to play chess and are not willing to learn some opening novelties on move 25 will come back to the world of chess. The Chess Tigers business fields top-tournaments, Chess960 and Entertainment flourisch and the new field University is up and coming. The foundation of the WNCA = "World New Chess Association" on 14.August 9:00 Uhr in Mainz will definitely have a powerful influence on Chess960. See you in Mainz 13.-17.August 2003!"
