1. World Rating List Chess960

How to get a rating ? IPS = Individual Player Strength

by Hans-Walter Schmitt

Never before has it been easier to step into the new rating system IPS ( Individual Player Strength). All you have to do is to play the 2. Chess960 Open in Mainz. During the Chess Classic Mainz 2003 (CCM3) not only the world championship Chess960 (Rapid) will be played, but also the Qualification tournament for the next world championship cycle will take place on 14 & 15 August 2003. At the moment more than 100 players have registered for the Chess960 Open with an average IPS of 2363. The favorite for the Open tournament will be Russian shooting-star Alexander Grishuk with an IPS of 2732 (number 6 of the FIDE ELO ratinglist), but the 19-year old Russian will meet strong competition. The average IPS of the top-10 seeded is 2676 and the average IPS of the top 50 is over 2600! Therefore, it will be easy for amateurs to get a very high IPS in this very strong field, not to forget the unforgettable experience to play against a top grandmaster over the board.

If you would like to read more about the rating-and title system of the WNCA = World New Chess Association, go to the article written by Hans-Walter Schmitt: “A pleading for Fischer´s ideas-say YES to Chess960” . You can find the article on our website. The convention for the official foundation of the WNCA will take place in Mainz on 14 August 9.00 AM. The Chess960 Open will start at 12.30 and the first game of the Rapid Chess960 world championship between Peter Leko and Peter Svidler is scheduled to start at 18.30 on the same day. If you want to have your Chess960 tournament in the IPS list as well, just contact our rating-director Hans-Dieter Post of the Chess Tigers. He will take care of the rating system until the WNCA takes over. Come to Mainz, to witness an important step in the history of Chess960 with the foundation of an international organisation. Be there as a player!
